Following the death of General Sani Abacha on June 8, 1998, Abdulsalami Abubakar assumed power as the de facto head of state of Nigeria. He inherited a country in political crisis and under international sanctions.
Abubakar oversaw a rapid transition to civilian democracy, organizing elections in February 1999 that brought Olusegun Obasanjo to power. He handed over authority to Obasanjo on May 29, 1999, ending 16 years of military rule in Nigeria.
