Charles Frederick of Baden vs Liliuokalani

Charles Frederick became Margrave of Baden-Durlach at age 10, ruling under a regency until 1746. He inherited a small, fragmented territory and began a long reign focused on centralization and reform.

Charles Frederick implemented enlightened reforms in Baden, including abolishing serfdom (1783), promoting religious tolerance, reforming the legal system, and encouraging education. He was influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment.

Through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss (1803) and later treaties, Charles Frederick significantly expanded Baden's territory. Baden absorbed numerous smaller states and ecclesiastical territories, becoming a major German state.

Charles Frederick was elevated from Margrave to Grand Duke of Baden by Napoleon after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. Baden joined the Confederation of the Rhine, gaining territory and status as a French ally.

Liliuokalani composed the song 'Aloha Oe' while still a princess. The song became a symbol of Hawaiian culture and identity, and is one of the most famous Hawaiian songs worldwide.

Liliuokalani became Queen of Hawaii on 29 January 1891, following the death of her brother King Kalakaua. She was the first and only queen regnant of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Liliuokalani attempted to replace the Bayonet Constitution of 1887 with a new constitution that would restore power to the monarchy and native Hawaiians. This move triggered a coup by American and European businessmen, who overthrew the monarchy.

On 17 January 1893, a group of American and European businessmen, supported by U.S. Minister John L. Stevens and U.S. Marines, overthrew Liliuokalani. She yielded under protest to avoid bloodshed, ending the Hawaiian monarchy.

In 1895, Liliuokalani was implicated in a failed counter-rebellion by royalists seeking to restore the monarchy. She was arrested, tried for treason, and forced to abdicate. She was imprisoned in Iolani Palace for eight months.
