Iturbide, a royalist general who had fought against the insurgents, was appointed to command the army against Vicente Guerrero. Instead of fighting, he negotiated with Guerrero and issued the Plan of Iguala on February 24, 1821, proposing independence, constitutional monarchy, and protection of the Catholic Church.
Iturbide's Army of the Three Guarantees entered Mexico City on September 27, 1821, ending the Mexican War of Independence. The next day, the Declaration of Independence of the Mexican Empire was signed. Iturbide became the head of a provisional government, effectively ruling Mexico.

Iturbide returned to Mexico in July 1824, unaware that Congress had declared him a traitor and outlaw. He was captured upon landing and executed by firing squad on July 19, 1824, in Padilla, Tamaulipas. His death ended any possibility of restoring the monarchy.
Nurhaci completed the unification of the fragmented Jurchen tribes of Manchuria. He organized them into the Eight Banners system, a military and social structure that became the foundation of his power. He then proclaimed the Later Jin dynasty.
Nurhaci proclaimed the establishment of the Later Jin dynasty in Manchuria, claiming legitimacy as a successor to the Jin dynasty. This act formally declared his independence from the Ming dynasty and established a rival state.
Nurhaci issued the Seven Grievances, a formal declaration of war against the Ming dynasty. The grievances listed alleged Ming injustices against the Jurchens, including interference in tribal affairs and killing of Jurchen leaders. This justified his invasion of Ming territory.
Nurhaci's forces decisively defeated a large Ming army at the Battle of Sarhu. The Ming sent four separate armies into Manchuria, but Nurhaci used interior lines to defeat them in detail. This victory secured his control over Manchuria.
Nurhaci led an invasion of Ming territory but was defeated at the Battle of Ningyuan by Ming general Yuan Chonghuan. The Ming used European-style cannons to repel the Later Jin forces. Nurhaci was wounded during the battle and died shortly after.
Each figure is scored on 6 dimensions (0—100 scale) based on structured historical data: Military (10%), Political (20%), Influence (20%), Legacy (20%), Leadership (15%), Strategy (15%). The weighted total produces the final ranking.
Scores are computed from structured sub-indicators in the database. Scale factors adjust for era (Ancient ×0.85, Modern ×1.0) and civilization size (Eastern ×1.05, Other ×0.80) to account for differences in population and military scale.
Comparisons are limited to 2—3 figures to ensure readability and statistical meaningfulness.
±5 points per dimension — Sub-scores are derived from historical records with inherent uncertainty. Two figures within 5 points on a dimension should be considered roughly equivalent in that area.
±3 points overall — The weighted combination of 6 dimensions produces a total score with approximately ±3 points of uncertainty. Differences of less than 3 points are not statistically significant— the figures are effectively tied.
Founding Emperor? Please. Iturbide was a turncoat who switched sides only when the royalist cause was collapsing — that's not genius, that's reading the room. His "empire" never controlled more than the capital and a few roads. Meanwhile, Nurhaci captured Shenyang, Liaoyang, and crushed the Ming's best armies before his grandson even got to Beijing. Iturbide got himself shot within seven months of abdicating. Nurhaci died in battle at 67, still undefeated. One was a footnote, the other founded a
Let's talk strategy. Iturbide's "genius move" was the Plan of Iguala — a political compromise, not a military victory. He won because the royalists were exhausted after 11 years of guerrilla war. Nurhaci actually innov
The "Eight Banners" claim is overblown. Nurhaci's banners at formation were basically hunting parties with delusions of grandeur — maybe 10,000 total. Iturbide's Army of the Three Guarantees had 16,000 disciplined troops plus artillery. If we're measuring military achievement by institutional complexity, Iturbide actually beats Nurhaci. But Iturbide's fatal mistake? He never formed a ruling class structure. Nurhaci turned his personal prestige into the Qing nobility system. That's the real diffe
