
Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, was an English mathematician and writer, chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage's proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. She was the first to recognize that the machine had applications beyond pure calculation, and to publish the first algorithm intended to be carried out by such a machine. As a result, she is often regarded as the first computer programmer.

Ada Lovelace died at age 36 from uterine cancer, likely exacerbated by bloodletting treatments. She was buried next to her father, Lord Byron, in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. Her contributions were largely forgotten until the mid-20th century.
