Ferdinand Magellan (c. 1480–1521), Portuguese explorer, led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. He discovered the Strait of Magellan, becoming the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean. Though killed in the Philippines, his voyage proved Earth's roundness.
