Morelos convened the Congress of Chilpancingo on September 13, 1813, which declared Mexican independence from Spain and drafted the first constitution. Morelos was captured by Spanish forces on November 5, 1815, while escorting the Congress. He was tried by the Inquisition, defrocked, and executed by firing squad on December 22, 1815, in San Crist
