Minamoto no Yoriyoshi was appointed Chinjufu Shogun, commander-in-chief for the defense of northern Japan. This appointment placed him in charge of military operations against the Abe clan in the Mutsu Province, initiating the Former Nine Years War.
Yoriyoshi's forces attacked the Abe clan stronghold at Kawasaki Fortress in Mutsu Province. The battle was a costly victory for the Minamoto, with heavy casualties on both sides, but it weakened Abe resistance and demonstrated the difficulty of the campaign.
Yoriyoshi led a prolonged siege of the Abe clan's fortress at Kuriyagawa. After a difficult campaign, he captured the fortress and killed the Abe leader, Abe no Sadato, effectively ending the Former Nine Years War and securing Minamoto dominance in the north.
